YOUR DEFENSIVE CIRCLE

Your defensive circle is invisible to the eye and untouchable by hand or foot. It's like a plastic bubble that surrounds you completely--from head to toe. Compare it to the "SHIELDS" for the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE in the STAR TREK movies. Your defensive circle is made up of two parts:

  1. PHYSICAL

  2. MENTAL

The unity of the two circles makes a barrier that helps protect you from physical harm.

The PHYSICAL CIRCLE is the area that you will take defensive action by contact with your opponent.
The limit of this circle is dictated by the length of your arms and legs.

The MENTAL CIRCLE is defensive awareness.
It's the development of the mind in relation to a hostile force and the determining of the proper action to take.

You will first learn how to strike, block and kick. You must understand how each is executed--then you will be in a better position to defend against them.
You must know how the body reacts to an opposing force, such as a punch or kick.
Certain strikes will disable, while using equal force, other strikes will only stun.

Concentration of the mind and power of the body come from relaxation of the mind and body.

Blending of the PHYSICAL CIRCLE and MENTAL CIRCLE create the DEFENSIVE CIRCLE.

The AVENUES of APPROACH are the EIGHT DIRECTIONS OF ATTACK against you.
The ANGLES of EVASION are the reverse of Avenues of Approach--they are the Eight Directions of moving out of the line of attack.

You must understand what DIRECTION of FORCE is. "It is the direction an object or form of power is moving."

To be able to defend, you must know the direction that the attack is coming from. It is:

  1. STRAIGHT LINE ATTACK

  2. ANGULAR ATTACK

  3. CIRCULAR ATTACK

SUNGJA-DO is a combination of hard and soft techniques; This is in balance with the theories of the DEFENSIVE CIRCLE.

  • Nothing is completely black or white!

  • No two things are completely hard or soft!

  • Blending of the two opposites is required by the LAWS of NATURE.

Examples:

  1. Light cannot exist without dark.

  2. Love cannot exist without hate.

  3. Man cannot exist without woman.

Everything in nature lives in harmony with everything else because of opposites.
