ILYEO

 

Ilyeo means the thought of a great Buddhist priest of Silla Dynasty, Saint Wonhyo, which is characterized by the philosophy of oneness of mind [spirit] and body [material]. It teaches that a point, a line or a circle ends up all in one. Therefore, the poomsae Ilyeo represents the harmonization of spirit and body, which is the essence of martial art, after a long training of various types of techniques and spiritual cultivation for completion of Taekwondo practice.

The new techniques introduced in this poomsae are son-nal-olgul-makki, wesanteul-yop-chagi, du-son-pyo[two opened hands]-bitureo-jabadangkigi [twisting and pulling], twio- yop-chagi and the first stance of ogeum[knee back]-hakdari-seogi. Jumbi-seogi is the bo-jumeok-moa-seogi [wrapped-up fist moa-seogi], in which, as the last step of poomsae training, two wrapped-up fists are placed in front of the chin, which has the significance of unification and moderation, so that the spiritual energy can flow freely into the body as well as the two hands. The line of poomsae symbolizes the Buddist mark [swastika], in commemoration of saint Wonhyo, which means a state of perfect selflessness in Buddhism where origin, substance and service come into congruity.

Movements - 27

READY STANCE: closed-toe stance.
Bring hands up to face. Left open hand lightly touches the right fist. Held at chin level.
 

  1. Step forward quickly with the left foot assuming a right back stance. Execute a knife hand face block, holding the index finger of the blocking hand (left) at eye level.

  2. Advance quickly into a right front stance. Execute a right body punch (middle level ).

  3. Bring the left foot to the right heel. Keep the right foot fixed. Assume a right back stance facing "B" and execute a diamond block slowly and under a great deal of tension (isometrically).

  4. Pivot on the right foot, turn counter-clockwise to face "C". Assume a right back stance while executing a knife hand body block as quickly as possible.

  5. Maintain the same stance and execute a right body punch to "C".

  6. Pushing off with the right foot, quickly jump forward, landing on the right foot assuming a right crane stance. Simultaneously execute a right spear hand strike with the left hand under the right elbow toward "C".

  7. Exerting a great deal of tension in the technique, without changing the stance, turn slowly on the right foot, the left side facing "C", then quickly execute a left side kick toward "C".

  8. Bring the left foot down quickly to assume a right back stance. Execute an upper X-block toward "C".

  9. Under tension, open the hands, twist and pull them inward. Step forward slowly into a right front stance and execute a right body punch.

  10. Bring the left foot up to the right. Keep the right foot fixed. Facing toward "D" assume a right back stance. Execute a diamond block.

  11. With the right foot fixed move the left foot toward "A" to assume a right back stance. Execute a knife hand body block.

  12. With the feet fixed, execute a right body punch toward "A".

  13. Pushing off with the right foot jump forward landing on the right foot, assuming a right crane stance. Execute a right spear hand strike with the left hand under the right elbow toward "A".

  14. Maintaining the same stance face "E" slowly and execute a left side kick toward "E".

  15. Bring the left foot down to assume a right back stance toward "E". Quickly execute a high X block toward "E".

  16. Under tension open the hands, twist and pull them inward. Slowly step forward to a right front stance. Execute a right body punch.

  17. With the right foot fixed, bring the left foot even with it, move the left foot toward "F", assuming a right back stance. Execute a diamond block slowly and under tension toward "F".

  18. Pivot to the left on the right foot. Bring the left foot to the right and assume an attention stance facing "D". Place both fists on the hips.

  19. With the hands in the same position execute a left front kick toward "G".

  20. Bring the left foot to the floor, push off with it and execute a right jumping side kick toward "G".

  21. Land in a left back stance. Execute a high X block toward "G".

  22. Open, twist and pull both hands inward, slowly under tension. Slowly move the left foot forward toward "G" to assume a left front stance. Execute a left body punch toward "G".

  23. Pivot clockwise on the left foot to face "H". Assume a left back stance. Slowly and forcibly execute the diamond block toward "H".

  24. Draw the right foot to the left to assume an attention stance facing "B". Place both fists on the hips.

  25. Execute a right front kick toward "B" with the fist still on the hips.

  26. As the right foot lands, push of with it and execute a left jumping side kick toward "B".

  27. Land in a right back stance. Execute a high X block under tension toward "B".
